Mapping Employee Skills for Effective Hiring, Development, and Succession Planning

Organizations often take a reactive approach to employee training and development, responding to an existing or imminent knowledge gap. For example, only providing training when employees transfer into a new position or when implementing a new process or technology. However, employee training and development can be approached in a more proactive way by aligning training initiatives with the organization’s strategic planning to ensure the most effective utilization of resources. Creating a Skills Map allows the organization to identify existing and potential gaps, build purposeful overlap for career pathways and succession planning, and build a foundation for aligning future strategic plans.
